He's an excellent skater with high-end effort and power. He generates speed well through his crossovers and is comfortable skating backward and executing pivots. His acceleration from a standstill is excellent and allows him to win a ton of races. Good strength and balance complement his skating and help him maintain advantages in puck battles. He is always moving, skating hard, and working to get involved in the play.
Offensively, he is used as a shooting threat on the power play and can get good wood on a one-timer. However, his shot gets blocked frequently, and he struggles to consistently get pucks on net or create shooting lanes. He is predictable as a shooter, both on the power play and off the rush, and misses opportunities to capitalize on his speed in transition. His hands are limited, and he is not a player who consistently makes defenders miss or creates offence through high-end skill. He tends to overhandle the puck relative to his ability level. He moves it reasonably well on the power play but is far too shot-heavy, and becoming less predictable could help him generate better opportunities for himself and his teammates.
He is a good receiver with decent hand-eye coordination and looks capable of being a decent faceoff man. His offensive game is built more around effort, puck retrieval, and creating turnovers than high-end creativity. The puck seems to follow him around, and he wins a tremendous number of pucks in the offensive zone. He created approximately five Grade-A scoring opportunities in this viewing but was not rewarded for his efforts. He does a good job stopping around the net and looking for opportunities to capitalize on loose pucks and second chances. While his playmaking upside is limited, his ability to pressure opponents and generate opportunities through persistence gives him offensive utility.
Defensively, he is an excellent prospect with strong hockey sense and anticipation. He is comfortable killing penalties and can move between positions effectively. He does a good job jumping passing lanes to create turnovers and clear the puck, and he consistently pressures opponents into making decisions they are uncomfortable with. His defensive awareness and ability to handle pace make him a reliable option in a variety of situations. He competes hard in all three zones and shows a strong understanding of how to disrupt the opposition.
He is smaller in stature but has a low centre of gravity and excellent body control, allowing him to shield pucks effectively. He is noticeably strong for his size and can knock opponents off the puck despite not going out of his way to deliver big hits. His stick is on the small side, which can limit his effectiveness when trying to disrupt opponents and win pucks but he's still good here. His work rate is exceptional, and he consistently battles, pressures, and competes for possession.
The primary question with this player is his offensive upside, but I believe the offence will come. His skating, compete level, defensive IQ, and strength provide an excellent foundation, and his ability to consistently win pucks, create turnovers, and get himself into scoring areas gives me confidence that he can develop more production over time. He could have finished this viewing with four or five points with better puck luck, as he consistently found ways to generate Grade-A opportunities. While his limited hands and predictable shooting tendencies currently restrict his offensive impact, I believe his relentless work ethic and ability to get himself involved in the play will allow him to find ways to contribute. His underlying numbers are encouraging, and he has the tools to become an effective lower-lineup forward who can handle situational centre responsibilities. Projects as a potential bottom-six forward with penalty-killing value, and I believe there is room for the offence to develop as he becomes more efficient and confident with the puck.
