Scouting Notes

He is a quality puck-moving defenceman who excels at initiating offence and transitioning the puck up ice. He is a solid backwards skater with average lateral mobility, although he lacks a significant separation gear when skating forwards. His initial burst from a standstill can also be limited, and he can struggle with speed when pivoting, often resorting to reaching to compensate. He has a quick release off the line and can provide a decent shooting threat when given time and space. His one-timer is serviceable but not particularly dangerous. Defensively, he has a decent stick, although his smaller frame allows opposing forwards to get inside his reach and attack closer to the net.

His greatest strength is his ability to move the puck and facilitate offence. He is a strong puck handler, and a solid receiver. He consistently looks to push the pace once he gets possession, making quality breakout passes and showing very good stretch-pass ability. He can hit forwards in stride and create chances with quick-strike distribution through the neutral zone. He is a solid transition mover who can help generate offence with his passing. His movement on the power play is also effective, although his execution can be inconsistent at times, as he occasionally fires passes well beyond his intended targets.

There are some concerns with his decision-making, particularly when defending the rush and managing his offensive involvement. He can be indecisive when forced to make quick reads and does not always make the best decisions when defending attacking forwards. His tendency to push offensively is evident, and he can overcommit regularly when looking to join the attack. His pinch decisions can be risky, leaving opportunities for opponents to exploit the space behind him. He does a reasonable job maintaining his defensive positioning in the offensive zone and does not simply float around looking for offence, but his overall mentality is still geared toward creating offence whenever he gets the puck. He could also benefit from utilizing high flips more frequently when under pressure rather than trying to force plays through traffic.

He can look complacent at times, with occasional lapses in effort and a lack of urgency when recovering after being beaten. While he generally works to maintain his defensive position, his recovery habits and ability to respond to broken plays are not always convincing. His physical limitations are another concern. He can be outmuscled by bigger opponents, even when making an effort to establish positioning and box out. For an older player, his current strength level is somewhat concerning, as he does not consistently demonstrate the physical presence needed to handle stronger forwards. His smaller frame and lack of strength could become increasingly problematic against higher-level competition.

Overall, he is an intriguing puck-moving defenceman who can add value through his breakout ability, stretch passing, and willingness to drive offence from the back end. He has the hands and passing ability to contribute to transition play and create opportunities, but there are legitimate questions about how his defensive game will translate to the next level. His size, current strength level, inconsistent defensive engagement, and tendency to overcommit offensively all create some risk. He has a foundation to be an effective offensive defenceman, but he will need to become more reliable with his defensive reads, improve his recovery habits, and develop physically to establish himself against stronger competition.
