Scouting Notes

An average to above-average skater who lacks true high-end speed or separation ability. He isn't particularly effective at pulling away from opponents or creating pressure through his skating, although once he gets moving, his pace is above average. His edges are adequate, but his pivots lack power and explosiveness. He isn't necessarily off balance through these movements, but he struggles to generate much force. His stop-start ability and initial acceleration are both respectable, while his forward-to-backward and backward-to-forward transitions remain areas for improvement.

Offensively, he is a rush-oriented player who prefers to shoot when established in the offensive zone. He has an adequate shot, but I'm not convinced it is a weapon that will consistently beat NHL goaltenders from distance. He also doesn't naturally get himself into high-danger areas around the net often enough. His puck skills are a strength. He is a solid handler with good deception, a strong stick, and the ability to maintain possession through contact. His reception skills are quite good, and he doesn't get stripped of the puck very often. He also shows some nifty passing ability, including the capacity to distribute effectively off both his forehand and backhand. His saucer passes on the rush are effective, and his overall rush distribution is a positive part of his offensive game. He is adequate in the faceoff circle, although he doesn't consistently demonstrate much leverage or dominance in that area.

On the power play, he is primarily looking to shoot, particularly when operating in the offensive zone. He has a tendency to become overly active trying to position himself for one-timers, and at times he appears impatient with the puck. I would like to see him settle into the play more and look to facilitate rather than constantly trying to set himself up as the finisher. There is more playmaking ability here than he consistently shows. He has the hands, passing touch, and vision to move the puck around effectively, including a good shot-pass, but he doesn't always take advantage of those tools. I believe he would be a more effective power-play contributor if he showed greater willingness to distribute and create for teammates.

Defensively, he is generally in position and appears to be in the zone, but I'm not always convinced he is identifying and picking up his assignments consistently. His defensive impact is limited, particularly when it comes to using his stick to disrupt plays or creating problems on the forecheck. He struggles to make much of an impact physically and doesn't consistently apply pressure to opposing puck carriers. I also don't see a great deal of translatable defensive value in his penalty-killing work at this stage. There are moments where he could be more assertive and engaged away from the puck, and I would like to see a greater commitment to the details of his defensive responsibilities.

Physically, he is undersized for a centre and can have difficulty handling bigger, stronger defenders. He is willing to engage physically and will make an effort to compete in those situations, but he too often loses the battle when opponents have a significant size or strength advantage. He isn't particularly timid, but his physical limitations do impact his ability to win possession battles and establish himself in contested areas.

Overall, I see more offensive potential here than he consistently brings to the table. There are some legitimate playmaking tools, particularly his puck handling, passing touch, and ability to distribute off either side, but he too often defaults to being a shooter. I think he could create considerably more for his linemates if he showed greater patience and recognized opportunities to facilitate rather than forcing plays to develop around himself. There are also concerns surrounding his decision-making, as I don't find he consistently makes the professional decision with the puck. He can become impatient, overly focused on getting himself into scoring positions, and too reliant on individual offensive opportunities. I'm not entirely convinced what his B game looks like when the offence isn't coming, particularly given his limited physical impact and lack of consistent defensive value. The offensive skill is interesting, but there needs to be more maturity in his approach, better decision-making, and a greater willingness to play through others rather than always looking to finish the play himself.
