Scouting Notes

A discounted diamond? This late 2007 birth year, may have been passed over at this past summers draft, but there's still some shine to this young goaltender. This was my first and only watch so far with Carter Casey but there is plenty to feel optimistic about with this goalie. In this game he walked away with the a comfortable win, one in which he always felt in command. There's no doubt that Casey is playing behind a strong team but he was able to bring plenty of timely saves, along with an assertive presence in the net. What jumps out most about his game at first glance is, undoubtedly, his athleticism and light-on-his-feet crease navigation. I would easily classify him as above average speed. Additionally, I like really like his hockey IQ and ability to anticipate the right plays. Another aspect that I find attractive in his game, is his willingness to get aggressive on dump-in's--there is nothing more valuable than the ability to neutralize the opposing team's forecheck. A few things I observed that I disliked were--a penchant for "small" play at times and some over extension of positioning. A more aggressive challenge, a more upright posture and a bit more composure within his game are some things I would love to see. Overall, Carter is a fantastic goalie and I am looking forward to following along this year and watching his game develop.
