A mobile, puck-moving defenseman who brings legitimate offensive upside through his skating, puck skills and ability to make plays under pressure. He has some power in his stride and is a good skater, using his edgework effectively to get into position on retrievals and create separation. He can break out under pressure, makes hard, accurate passes and consistently looks to move the puck quickly.
His offensive game is more advanced than his defensive game at this stage. He shows quarterback ability on the power play, moving the puck hard and quickly while demonstrating the ability to make a variety of passes. He also has some playmaking ability in the offensive zone and can create offense from the blue line.
One of his strongest attributes is his ability to move the puck. He is confident on retrievals and can execute breakouts under pressure. He makes firm passes to teammates in stride and shows good recognition of available options. When a conventional passing lane isn't available, he is comfortable using high flips or chips to get the puck out.
He is a solid decision-maker with the puck and doesn't appear easily rattled by pressure. His passing ability should translate well to a faster level, particularly given his willingness to move the puck quickly rather than holding onto it unnecessarily.
There is legitimate offensive value in his game. He has the skill set to contribute on the power play, showing quarterback ability from the point and the ability to distribute the puck quickly. He can make different types of passes and has enough skill to create opportunities from the offensive zone.
His point shot can get a little wild at times, however, and his offensive instincts can occasionally lead him to wander on pinches.
He is not a big defenseman and can play small defensively. His skating gives him a chance to defend, and he has relatively strong feet despite his lighter frame, but his defensive skating doesn't always translate into effective containment. He doesn't consistently close with enough efficiency on defensive rushes, making it somewhat easy for opponents to move the puck around him.
His stick is another concern. He doesn't have much reach and doesn't consistently disrupt enough pucks with his stick. For a smaller defenseman, the lack of an impactful defensive stick is particularly problematic because he needs to use anticipation, positioning and stick detail to compensate for the lack of size.
There are also some coverage issues. He can become puck-watching and lose opponents, while there are sequences where he appears to run around in his own zone. Clearances were inconsistent as well. He competes and battles, but the overall defensive impact isn't consistently there yet.
The offensive foundation is intriguing. He can skate, retrieve pucks, break out under pressure and make difficult passes quickly. Those are translatable NHL skills, and his power-play ability gives him an additional avenue to provide value.
The question is whether he can defend well enough to earn consistent NHL minutes.
His size alone isn't necessarily the issue; the bigger concern is that his defensive tools don't currently compensate for it. The short stick, inconsistent gap closure, coverage breakdowns and tendency to lose players can leave him vulnerable against attacking forwards.
Overall, he projects as an offense-first puck-moving defenseman with NHL upside, but there is legitimate risk in his defensive projection. His ability to improve his gap control, defensive positioning, stick detail and coverage awareness will likely determine whether he can become a reliable NHL defender rather than simply an offensive specialist.
