Speed, competitiveness, and work ethic - these are the names of the game for Max Calce. Only played 10 minutes in this one (all at 5v5), but made a big impact with 2 goals and heady 3-zone play. Displayed good NZ & DZ positioning on multiple pass intercepts, and shows a good stick and ability to strip pucks. Great DZ effort led to 1st goal, which found its way in on a lucky bounce, but was a real hard work play up to that point. Really aggressive on the forecheck, very effective and generally plays with a physical edge. Did a good job on the cycle, protected the puck well on multiple occasions. Got to middle of ice regularly, as well as the front of net, used his speed very effectively in this regard. Got low on the breakout and attacked the NZ with tons of speed. Highlight reel 2nd goal where he goes end-to-end and slides the puck through triangle on D and around the goalie for a slick finish. Feet are always moving, never stagnant. All around high-effort level. His playmaking was a bit of a mixed bag, with multiple giveaways due to force or hope plays. Sees some creative options open up but needs to pick his spots a bit better in terms of delivering riskier passes or plays into traffic where his main option is well-covered. I do like his ideas a lot of the time, but they can result in some turnovers. The vision does show upside, however. Overall, a very good viewing for Calce here and he displayed both a very high floor due to the speed and work rate, yet also some pretty high-end upside with the offensive abilities. This is a very intriguing prospect who looked great against Pro competition.
