Overall a quality showing from Mares in this one. He was competitive in all 3 zones and was able to get on the score sheet as well with a really nice tip-in goal. The size and physical play are excellent, naturally. He was bull to handle down low and along the boards, and regularly planted himself in front of the net (which led to his goal). The skating is fine once he's up to speed, but the quickness and burst will be a work-in-progress for him throughout the season - not totally unexpected given his size. Considering how big he is, the skating is actually quite good compared to other kids his age and size. In terms of projection, there is likely a very high-floor here as a Bottom 6 guy - he just has so many pro traits. The upside is where I have my questions, and we will see as the season progresses what time of true offensive upside exists here. There were some instances where the coordination looked a bit off, and he missed plays that true high end offensive players would have made. These issues are also not totally unexpected with big players, and they tend to have a longer development curve as their coordination catches up to their massive growth rates over time. Overall this is a very quality prospect and had a good showing in this game.
